Recreation

From luxurious resorts to family-oriented attractions, Monroe County offers something for everyone. A popular four-seasons vacation destination nestled in the Northeastern corner of Pennsylvania’s Pocono Mountains, Monroe County is dotted with sparkling lakes and streams and surrounded by gentle mountains. It’s a haven for outdoor enthusiasts at any time of year as well as families and individuals looking for a tranquil retreat from hectic city life.As far back as the 1800’s, people flocked to the Pocono Mountains region to enjoy the clean, cool air and relaxing environment. Honeymooners discovered the area during World War II and have continued to vacation here in large numbers. The peace and quiet have suited many religious groups who have chosen the region as the perfect place for their retreats. Families have also traditionally found the area a great place to get away together.

With more than 250 holes of scenic, challenging golf and more than 85,000 yards of picturesque fairways and greens, the region has grown in popularity as a golf destination. But even non-golfers will find plenty of outdoor activities to enjoy. The region boasts fine white-water rafting and canoeing on its many rivers and lakes along with excellent fishing. There’s also horseback riding, hiking and biking. Pocono Heritage Tours are being designed that will take visitors through areas full of Pocono Mountains history. Visitors can stop in or walk through historical associations, drive over covered bridges, visit museums and galleries or dine in a restaurant that has historical significance.

For winter sports, there are seven major ski areas plus five resort ski areas with outstanding “Learn to Ski” programs for beginners as well as challenging runs for the more expert skier. Other winter sports include ice fishing, snowmobiling, cross-country skiing, sledding, tobogganing and snow tubing.
